Christmas trees can make fish habitats

The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission is seeking leftover Christmas trees for fish habitats.

The small spaces and dense cover offered by fresh Christmas trees make excellent nursery habitat for small fish, according to the commission.

The commission has seen an increase in smaller fish when Christmas trees have been sunk in ponds and other bodies of water.

Young bass, crappie and other bait fish all benefit from the cover and larger game fish will be attracted to the smaller fish.

Trees should be clean of all ornaments, lights and tinsel before they are dropped off. Artificial Christmas trees should not be used as fish habitat.

Trees may be dropped off at any of these locations in Southwest Arkansas:

Bois d'Arc Lake at Kidd's Landing or Hatfield Access; Millwood Lake at Cottonshed, White Cliff's Recreation Areas and the Millwood State Park ramp on the point; Dierks Lake at Jefferson Ridge South Recreation Area; De Queen Lake at any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat ramp; Gillham Lake at any U.S. Army Corps of Engineers boat ramp; and Lake Greeson at the New Cowhide Cove and Self Creek Recreation areas.
