2015 third wettest year since 1985, NWS officials say

Most rain in 30 years fell in 2009

It seemed it would never stop raining in 2015.

The rain contributed to record levels on area rivers and resulted in major flooding.

So it may come as a surprise that 2015 was only Texarkana's third wettest year in the past 30 years according to data from wunderground.com.

Texarkana received 63.54 inches of rain in 2015 according to the data.

However, 2009 was the wettest year on record since 1985 with 78.9 inches of rain recorded and 2001 was the second wettest year with 70.43 inches.

"Our records are showing 2009 to 2010 was a moderate El Nino year. There was a lot of rain that year," said Davyon Hill, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Shreveport, La.

Hill said Texarkana received 16.5 inches of rain in October 2009 alone.

"There was a bunch of heavy rain that month," he said.

According to a news release from NOAA, the year 2009 could be summed up as "wet" or "rainy." It was the wettest year on record for Texarkana and also the state of Arkansas (1957 was second wettest). There was widespread flash flooding and top 10 crests were established on area rivers.

In July 2009, NOAA scientists announced the arrival of El Nio, a climate phenomenon with a significant influence on global weather, ocean conditions and marine fisheries. El Nio, the periodic warming of central and eastern tropical Pacific waters, occurs on average every two to five years and typically lasts about 12 months.

The year began with an historic and destructive ice storm across northern sections of the state in January. A foot of snow blanketed portions of the northeast in February. Heading into Spring, severe weather was minimal at first, but that changed on April 9 when 45 tornadoes struck the state of Arkansas. There were three fatalities from a tornado at Mena, Ark.

The annual average is 26 tornadoes. The big wind and hail events for the year both occurred in June.

This year's El Nino has been one of the largest on record and strongest in recent years.

"We had a pretty strong El Nino in '97 and '98. This is comparable to that. There are usually more thunderstorms during an El Nino, milder to normal winters and heavy rain," Hill said.

This year's winter weather has been very mild so far. But colder temperatures and winter weather cannot be ruled out.

"We will be in El Nino a few more months, at least through the winter, but it doesn't mean we won't have any winter weather," Hill said.
