HAVING A GREAT TIME

Numerous friends of Horace F. Endsley received postcard messages from him dated at Dallas, and on which he states he has driven more than 400 miles in his automobile so far without even a puncture. "The roads are just grand here, and we are having a delightful time. Dallas is a splendid city," he writes.

July 19:

RED CROSS CAR COMING

An important bulletin was issued today by Dr. H.H. Smiley, surgeon in chief of the St. Louis Southwestern Railway Employee's Hospital in the city advising that a Red Cross car would arrive in Texarkana Saturday, September 2nd. All employees and community are being urged to attend the lectures to be announced on that day.

MORE PICKERS TO FIELDS

Cotton pickers to the number of 121 shipped from this city to Corsicana and Rockdale, Texas, last night. Labor agents are kept busy here securing hands for the fields. Many have been hired in the last two weeks.

POSTAGE STAMP SALES

Approximately 172,000,000,000 postage stamps have been issued by the United States since they were first placed on sale at New York, July 1, 1847. They hit the billion mark in 1882 and the eleven billion make in 1914. Last year (1915) the exact number of ordinary postage stamps issued by the U.S. was 11,793,764,296. Making 1916 a popular year for stamps.

July 22:

WOMAN GIVES BIRTH TO BABY BOY WHILE RIDING IN A HEARSE

Otto Ronenberg, a chauffeur for a local undertaking company, was delivering a coffin this morning, and when he drove alongside a street car, he was hailed by the conductor as follows: "There is a sick woman on this car, wish you would take her to the hospital." When Rodenberg stopped his machine the woman was transferred from the car to his hearse. When he reached the hospital, it was to his surprise to discover that he had two passengers, the woman having given birth to a baby boy.

WEST SIDE WILL PAVE ON SPRUCE STREET AT ONCE

Improvements will cover distance from Broad street, to front street, and will cost $3,183.45. Other work is being considered, Walnut street improvement estimates are furnished by City Engineer.

SAVING FUEL

Whether cooking by gas, wood or other fuel, be sure that nothing impedes a free draft, so that the combustion will be complete and no heat is being wasted. Only the tip of the flame should touch the cooking utensil, as the tip of the flame is the hottest point. If the flame is spread over the bottom of the utensil, a great amount of heat is being wasted.

PRIZE WINNERS

Winners of the grand prizes of the recent seventh birthday celebration of Security Savings and Loan Association were Mrs. Ruby Niemeyer of Route 10, Texarkana, winning an outboard motor, and Mrs. Evelyn L. Berneburg of New Boston won an electric dishwasher. The prizes were awarded by Miss Double Dynamic (Sue Waddell) and Scott Brookshire, first vice president of Security Savings.

GIRL SCOUTS HAVE COOK BADGE CONTEST AT JEFFERSON AVENUE

Twenty-six Girl Scouts, ages 8-11 years completed the outdoor cook badge at Jefferson Avenue Park this. These five Texarkana bowlers recently received trophies for being the highest scoring bowlers of last season. They are Jim Cunningham, high, no handicap (289), Whitey Walraven, high series handicap (744), Ann Holmes, high game, no handicap (251), Estelle Brock, high series Handicap (702), J.R. Cole, high series no handicap (712), Bettie Stewart who won the trophy for high series no handicap (619).

July 21:

CLUBS PARTICIPATE IN FORESTRY AWARD PROGRAM

The Arkadelphia and Redwater 4-H Clubs of Bowie County are participating in a 4-H Forestry Award Program which is available for 4-H Clubs in 46 East Texas counties. The Arkadelphia 4-H organization, under the sponsorship of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Traylor, Mrs. Romey Fisher, Harry Henderson and Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Forte, is entering its third year of participation in the forestry program. Four Redwater club members are enrolling in the program for the first time this year. Adult 4-H leaders at Redwater are Mrs. Hazel Holloway, Mrs. Lottie Evans, S.C. Page, Nathaniel Graham and Mrs. Mattie Holloway. Awareness of the need to develop and conserve timber resources is emphasized.

GIVEN KEYS

A motorcycle was accused in court Wednesday of disrupting the home life of a husband and wife. The wife demanded the vehicle be sold because her husband used it to roam about at nights. He claimed he needed it for work. The court ruled that the ignition keys should be handed over to the wife and she would only let him drive to work and back.

GOING TO CONFERENCE

Nine high school students and Mrs. George DeLaughter, chairman of Youth Red Cross, will leave Monday for Austin College, Sherman, to attend the Red Cross Youth Leadership Conference.
