Annual Trey-Lympics set for July 30

The 2016 Trey-Lympics will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 30 at North Heights Junior High Gymnasium, 2118 E. 35th St., Texarkana, Ark. Registration is at 10 a.m.

Prizes will be awarded for best team name, best costume, spirit award and longest distance traveled.

The event gives adults a chance to go back to their youth for a good cause-the Trey Varner Benevolent Fund.

"It's sort of like a field day, the kind you used to have in elementary school," said Sandy Varner, Trey's mom and event organizer. "We do some of the same games and some other more challenging games."

Human Hungry Hippo is an example of one game.

"That one is pretty funny," Varner said.

The cost to participate is $25 per person. Teams can also participate.

All events are indoors.

"How often do adults get to get together and do those kind of games? It's just a way for adults to come together and have fun. A lot of these people are people who knew Trey and it's a chance for me to get to see all these kids, people that knew and loved him," Varner said.

The public is invited and there is no admission fee.

"It's something fun to watch. . It doesn't cost anything to get in. You can come and cheer people on and just watch the goofiness of it all," Varner said.

The Trey Varner Benevolent Fund was established in 2014 by the family and friends of Trey Varner following his death in 2013. The purpose of the fund is to assist people or organizations with specific needs that can't be met through traditional methods. Eligibility for funds is determined by a committee appointed by the Varner family. More than $5,500 in scholarships have been awarded the past two years.
