Filing opens for races on Texas side

Beginning today, Texas-side political candidates can file to run in this year's general election. The filing deadline is 5 p.m. Aug. 22.

Texarkana, Texas, residents on Nov. 8 will elect a mayor and City Council members from Wards 1, 4 and 6.

All four incumbents-Mayor Bob Bruggeman, Ward 1 Council Member Jean Matlock, Ward 4's Brian Matthews and Ward 6's Josh Davis-plan to run for re-election.

To get on the ballot, a candidate must complete an application available at City Hall, 220 Texas Blvd., or on the city's website, ci.texarkana.tx.us. There is no filing fee.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old. Each must have been a Texas resident for at least 12 months as of Aug. 22. Mayoral candidates must have resided in the city, and council candidates in their respective wards, for at least six months as of Aug. 22.

The mayor and City Council members serve two-year terms.
