Brookshire to acquire stores Wal-Mart closed around Texarkana

Brookshire Grocery Co. has announced its pending acquisition of 25 former Wal-Mart stores, including the handful that closed recently in the Texarkana area, according to a company spokeswoman.

The stores will open this summer as the company's new Spring Market brand, said Director of Public Relations Rebecca Sanders. The acquisition is scheduled to close in July. The company will open five stores in Louisiana and 20 in Texas, including the sites in DeKalb, Hughes Springs, Lone Star, Redwater and Naples.

The five stores in the area were closed this January, just a year after they opened, according to earlier Gazette reports.

"The name Spring Market represents and honors the company's great history, which began in 1928 with the opening of its first store on Spring Avenue in Tyler, Texas," Sanders said.

The stores will offer "hometown convenience in an easy-to-shop format" with a variety of products at competitive prices, she said.

"Our Spring Market stores will stand for friendly service, quality products, affordable convenience and a pleasant shopping environment. We are also really excited to hire hundreds of employees from these communities to help us take care of our new customers," Chairman and CEO Brad Brookshire said. "We look forward to making a positive difference in each of these communities through our people, products, stores and service."

Other stores will be opened in Anson, Diana, Edgewood, Frankston, Godley, Grandview, Haskell, Italy, Kemp, Leonard, Merkel, Palmer, Waskom, Whitewright and Winters in Texas and Colfax, Iowa, Lake Arthur, Mamou and Zwolle in Louisiana.
