Farm Service Agency to hold regional elections for farmers

Nominations to serve on the Farm Service Agency County Committee will be taken through August.

To be eligible, a person must participate in a program administered by the Farm Service Agency, be eligible to vote in a county committee election and live in the county where the person is nominated.

This year, the election will be in the central and southwest part of Miller County, a local administrative area known as LAA-3.

The northern boundary of the area begins along the south side of U.S. Highway 82 East and extends south and west of the Sulphur River. This area includes the communities of Genoa, Fouke, Doddridge, Bright Star, Ravana, Kiblah and Smithville.

"Farmer and ranchers may nominate themselves or other people," said Barbara Austin, program technician.

Organizations representing minorities and women may also nominate candidates.

Nomination forms for the election must be postmarked or received in the local USDA Service Center by the close of business Aug. 1. Elections will be in the fall.

The Farm Service Agency will mail ballots to eligible voters beginning Nov. 7. They are due back to the local county office either via mail or in person by Dec. 5. Newly elected committee members and alternates take office Jan. 2.

Miller County consists of three LAA boundaries, Austin said.

LAA 1 is the northern part of Miller County and includes the area east and north of Texarkana along U.S. Highway 82 to Miller County Road 21 then north to state Highway 296 then east to the Red River. This area includes Trigg, Homan and Texarkana.

LAA 2 is the eastern part of Miller County. "It encompasses the majority of cropland in the county along the Red River," said Austin. This area includes the communities of Hervey, Garland and Valley Gin.
