Officials to recount votes in anti-discrimination ordinance election

Officials: Early votes counted twice; recount will not change outcome

Votes will be recounted in Tuesday's election to repeal Texarkana, Ark.'s nondiscrimination ordinance. The election's result will not change.

Officials counted early votes twice Tuesday night, inflating the total number of votes, Miller County Election Coordinator Linda Crawford said.

Election commissioners will conduct a public recount of the votes at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Miller County Courthouse.

The new vote count will not change the result of the election or the winning side's margin of victory, only the total number of votes, Crawford said.

Residents elected Tuesday to repeal the controversial Ordinance No. M-130. The ordinance sought to prohibit the city and businesses that contract with it from discriminating on the basis of a several characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity.
