Pregnancy center to host 5K benefit Saturday at park

1st Choice Pregnancy Resource Center's Walk/Run for Life will take place Saturday morning at Spring Lake Park. The 5K and 10K races will start at 7:30 a.m., the kids' fun run will begin at 8 a.m., and the walk will start at 9:30 a.m.

The cost to enter the 5K/10K is $35. The other events are free, but donations are welcome.

Organizers hope to raise $40,000 with this event.

"We only have two fundraisers a year, and this is one of them," said Kristie Wright, 1st Choice executive director. "Proceeds from this event help with operations throughout the year, including providing pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, class materials and all of our operating expenses. It's huge for us. If the walk is not a success then we have to re-evaluate our budget for the rest of the year."

1st Choice is a pro-life, Christian organization offering services to men and women who are expecting or think they might be.

"Our mission is to empower our patients to choose life. We do that by offering limited medical services, including pregnancy tests and ultrasounds," Wright said.

1st Choice also offers a variety of parenting classes for expecting parents and a Mommy Store where clients can spend "mommy dollars" they've earned by attending classes to get necessities for a baby, including diapers, wipes and more.

All services at 1st Choice are free and confidential.

"This is an easy way to support us. It doesn't cost a whole lot. It's a fun-filled morning where we're concentrating on celebrating life," Wright said.
