A Redwater Middle School student on a bicycle was hit by a vehicle driven by a high school student as both were leaving school Thursday afternoon, said Dr. Kathy Allen, Redwater Independent School District superintendent.

The middle-schooler was alert and conscious when paramedics arrived, Allen said.

After school was released, Allen said the student was hit as the students left the high school parking lot on Farm to Market Road 991, which runs next to the school.

The student was taken to CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital and was alert when paramedics arrived, Allen said, adding that he had a laceration over his left eyebrow.

"We are very fortunate," she said of the possibility of greater injuries.

Allen was unsure if there were any citations issued, but said that a Bowie County deputy and a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper were on the scene at 4:45 p.m.

Further information was unavailable at presstime. Bowie County Chief Deputy
Jeff Neal said Texas state troopers would have to answer questions regarding the accident and that he had no official information.

Trooper Sylvia Jennings, DPS spokeswoman, said at presstime she believed the Bowie County Sheriff's Office worked the incident and that she did not have official information on the incident either.
