A Texas-side woman was injured from a gunshot wound to the foot Monday night after a Walnut Street neighbor-now dead-allegedly fired a single shot through the doorknob from outside the home she was occupying, police said.

Two shots were heard at separate times, Shawn Vaughn, Texarkana, Texas, police spokesman said.

About 9:45 p.m. Monday, a male neighbor was attempting to gain entrance to a house in the 3000 block of Walnut Street.

"For unknown reasons, (he) fired a single shot at the front door's doorknob with a shotgun," Vaughn said. "A woman, who was inside the house on the other side of the door was struck in the foot. The man left."

A short time later, a second shot was heard and the suspected shooter was found dead "in the backyard of a nearby residence, of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound," according to a report.

"Based on the report, it appears that they were only neighbors," Vaughn said.

The injured woman was taken to the hospital with no life-threatening injuries, but it was unknown at presstime Tuesday whether she had been released.
