A year-end look at Hughes Springs ISD

Hughes Springs Independent School District made its mark in academic and sports endeavors this year.

Hughes Springs Elementary had a strong performance in University Interscholastic League competition this year with several of our students placing in the various events.

We partnered with Master Gardeners to plant a campus garden.

Several food drives were held for the community.

Students participated in the St. Jude Children's Hospital Math-a-Thon for cancer research.

The junior high students placed third in the UIL one-act play. The students took sixth place overall in the state UIL math meet with a seventh place in number sense, fourth place in calculator and 10th place in general math. They placed 11th in UIL science competition.

The junior high choir earned three first divisions and two second divisions in UIL competition. The had a strong showing in solo and ensemble competitions, earning 42 first-division medals.

Our high school valedictorian is Savannah Wright and salutatorian is Shelbi Golden.

Our 2016 Seniors were awarded $66,462.00 in community scholarships. Military, individual and college scholarships awarded were $811,952, making the grand total of scholarships for the class of 2016 $878,414.

HSISD was also a strong contender in sports as a bi-district qualifier in footbal, area champs and regional qualifiers in boys track, regional qualifier in girls track, girls and boys regional qualifiers in cross country, fourth in state in powerlifting, area qualifier in baseball, regional quarterfinalists in softball, regional qualifiers in girls golf, boys and girls regional qualifiers in tennis.

The high school choir was also a state qualifier.

The high school band won Sweepstakes, earning a 1 in marching, concert and sight reading contests.

The twirling line was a state qualifier for ensemble, had three state qualifiers for solo routines and area qualifiers for ensemble and solo contests.

FFA forestry team and DECA members were also state qualifiers.

FCCLA were regional and state qualifiers.

The robotics team was also a state qualifier.

The high school also had state qualifiers in prose and poetry and 15 regional qualifiers.

One-act play students were also regional qualifiers.
