Miller County Circuit Clerk Mary Pankey warns property owners about a scam seeking fees to make copies of property deeds for an exorbitant price.

"Beware of letter notifications by mail or by phone that
are offering a certified copy of your deed or any other document for an inflated fee," Pankey said.

"New property transfer transactions are usually targeted by an out-of-state company offering to provide you a certified copy of your deed for an exorbitant fee," she said.

Pankey serves as the Miller County Circuit Clerk, and is the "Ex-officio County Recorder" of public records and real property records.

"This consists of recording all types of deeds, mortgages, liens, contracts, agreements, surety bonds and any type of document which involves property within Miller County. These documents are public records and are easily accessible to the public. This includes the property owners or parties of the document," Pankey said.

"If you would like to obtain a copy or certified copy of your deed or any other document that is filed for public record, you are welcome to come to the circuit clerk's office 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and purchase the document for a fee of $1 per page. To certify the document, it will be an additional $5 fee per document," she said.
