Liberty-Eylau Primary School was placed on lockdown for a couple of hours Wednesday while police searched for a man who allegedly fled on foot during a traffic stop in Bowie County.

Michael Shane Basham, 29, of Aledo, Texas, was the passenger in a vehicle stopped by Texas Department of Public Safety troopers at 11:10 a.m. near U.S. Highway 59 and Randall Road, said Sgt. Sylvia Jennings, DPS spokeswoman. Basham reportedly ran from the scene after the vehicle stopped.

L-EISD officials would not allow anyone to exit or enter the primary school during the search.

Basham was arrested shortly after 2 p.m. after search dogs from the Telford Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections located him hiding in a thicket, Jennings said.

"We were waiting on the dogs, and they found him shortly after they got here. It was very near where the traffic stop was," Jennings said.

Basham is being charged with evading arrest and possession of marijuana, Jennings said. He also has warrants out of Aledo.

The driver of the vehicle was not charged, Jennings said.

Bowie County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search.
