The Miller County Quorum Court approved funding, if needed, for electronic voting equipment replacement during a called meeting Tuesday.

The Miller County Election Commission has been working with the Arkansas Secretary of State to determine who will pay for the equipment. The Secretary of State has been unable to designate a specific funding source for the replacement of electronic voting equipment, according to a resolution.

The commission is exploring options for Miller County to determine the best course of action for the replacement of the equipment, said Brandon Cogburn, election commission chairman.

"A lot of variables exist. It's uncertain how much money would be needed," Cogburn said.

New voting machines will be needed but probably not until the 2018 elections.

The commission may be able to save costs by eliminating five polling places, but hearings will be conducted before polling places are consolidated, he said.
