Remember When: There were no clothes dryers

I am old enough to remember when there were no clothes dryers.

My mother hung the clothes out to dry on a heavy-gauge wire strung between a tree and a post in our yard.

She carefully wiped the wire off with a damp rag to get all dirt, dust and any bird droppings off before she hung the wash out to dry.

My father had fashioned a bag with a wire hanger that hung on the line to hold the wooden clothespins.

The sun-and-wind-dried bedsheets had a really fresh good smell, with a trace of an odor left from the soap.

Later, detergents such as Tide, made especially for washing clothes, came along.

My mother started using them, and we lost the soap fragrance.
