Miller County directors OK voluntary tax contributions

Miller County and City of Texarkana, Ark., taxpayers now have the option to contribute $10 on every tax statement issued by Miller County for the benefit of the city's general fund and the Miller County Correctional Center.

The justices of the peace approved two ordinances Monday giving Texarkana, Ark., and Miller County taxpayers the option to pay the additional $10.

The "voluntary contribution" will benefit the Miller County Maintenance and Operation Fund of the Miller County Correctional Center.

Texarkana, Ark., can now implement the $10 voluntary tax to benefit the general operating funds for the city.

The Quorum Court's budget and finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. today in the county judge's office to review the amount of funds needed for upcoming school board elections.

The Quorum Court also approved the Fouke School District's request to provide the district with a resource officer for campus security. A deputy will be used, similar to the resource officer for the Genoa School District.

The school district will reimburse the county for the funds needed for the officer, including a patrol vehicle.

The funds will be $45,000 for benefits and salary.

"This will help provide security for the school district," said Fouke School District Superintendent Jim Buie.
