Police investigating alleged assault of child on school bus

Officials: Students were returning from a game in Paris, Texas

The alleged assault of a local student on a school bus has been referred to Red River County Sheriff's Office, officials said.

"We took a report Friday of the alleged incident that happened on the (Pleasant Grove) bus coming back from Paris on Thursday night," said Shawn Vaughn, Texarkana, Texas, Police Department spokesman. "Because this appears to have happened in Red River (County), we contacted them, and they are doing an investigation because it is outside of our jurisdiction."

The Pleasant Grove Independent School District bus was carrying the middle school boys' basketball team when the alleged incident occurred.

Superintendent Dr. Jason Smith said the alleged victim's parents have filed an assault report.

Smith said he has met with campus administration and that they have been getting statements from students and staff since they were notified of the incident on Saturday.

"We're taking it very seriously. These are serious allegations, and we are taking it that way. We are working fully with TTPD and are going to be cooperative with them to make sure the investigation is done as thoroughly as it can be. Campus administration will continue with their own investigation, as well, in conjunction with law enforcement investigation."

The Red River Sheriff's Office could not be immediately reached for comment.
