Tire collection deemed success

Organizers are calling Texarkana's first tire amnesty day a success.

In four hours on Saturday, volunteers from Cooper Tire and Rubber Co., Davis Waste Control and the city of Texarkana, Ark., collected 469 waste tires from residents of both Texarkanas, free of charge.

"To say the least it was hit. That's 469 tires that will be recycled rather than possibly end up in a landfill," said Butch Davis, owner of Davis Waste Control.

An Arkansas processor will make fuel out of the collected tires.

The city plans to hold tire amnesty days twice a year.
