Chili cook-off will support band's D.C. trip

Liberty-Eylau Independent School District Leopard Pride Band will hold a concert and chili cook-off Thursday.

The free, Christmas-themed concert will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Rader Dome and will feature the beginner, middle school and high school bands.

The cook-off will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the media center and cafeteria. Proceeds from the cook-off will support the high school band's trip to Washington, D.C., to perform in the 2018 National Memorial Day Parade.

The band was nominated to perform in the parade by U.S. Rep. John Ratcliffe.

Band booster Angela Murphy said the annual concert is always enjoyable, especially this year with the addition of the chili cook-off.

"The students always have a good time and get to play for their families and all that," she said. "It will be a really good concert ,and it's a good way to raise funds for the high school band trip."

Chili tasting is $5 and includes a drink and voting ballot, with other concessions available for purchase. Entry fee for the cook-off is $25, and winners will receive trophies and cash prizes. Winners will be announced after the high school band performance, and bowls of chili will also be available for purchase after the concert.

Entry forms are available at the administration office, 2901 Leopard Drive, Texarkana, Texas. Forms must be returned by 3:30 p.m. Monday. Contestants must bring their own slow cooker and a minimum of 2 gallons of chili. They must also be present to win.
