A massive fire destroyed Ok Lumber Thursday in Idabel, Okla., but no one was hurt fighting the fire during the night and into Friday morning.

Firefighters remained on scene Friday morning to contain the "hot spots" where the building continued to burn.

The fire was reported about 10 p.m. Thursday. The lumber yard is located in the 1800 block of S.E. Washington St.

The Idabel and Broken Bow Fire Departments, both full-time fire departments, and volunteer fire departments from Haworth, Holly Creek and Garvin responded to the fire calls. The Valliant Fire Department was on standby during the night to respond if needed, Idabel Mayor Tina Foshee-Thomas said.

"Almost all firefighters worked through the night to control the fire," the mayor said.

The cause of the fire was uncertain, but she said a code enforcement officer said the fire may have started in sawdust where employees cut lumber.

"We watched the fire and felt so helpless and felt sick," said Foshee-Thomas, who stood near the owners of the business, Mike and Barbara Palmer.

"I felt sorry for the firefighters, who looked exhausted. We got plenty of help and we're so grateful for the volunteers who came to our rescue fighting the fire," Foshee-Thomas said.

Fire Chief Greg Oliver also praised the area firefighters.

"They helped to provide the manpower and I appreciate everyone's help," Oliver said.

The mayor also said city employees and the police department helped to control the scene.
