The city of Texarkana, Texas, will celebrate Arbor Day by giving away free trees.
City Hall will partner with Texas A&M Forest Service and Arkansas Forestry Commission to give away trees during Texarkana's third annual Arbor Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on March 4 across from the Rotary Splash Pad at Spring Lake Park.
The city invites the public to participate by selecting free trees to take home and plant. Bare root seedlings and small potted trees will be available on a first come, first served basis.
A certified arborist carefully researched which tree species to offer and chose varieties adaptable to Texarkana's climate. Available species may include eastern redbud, cottonwood, silky dogwood, pecan, sawtooth oak, gobbler sawtooth oak, chestnut oak, shumard oak, cherrybark oak and nuttall oak.
Members of Texarkana Water Utilities; the Texas-side Parks and Wellness and Planning and Community Development departments; Arkansas Forestry Commission; and Texas A&M Forest Service will be on hand to answer questions and help.
