lanet Fitness opened its doors to Texarkana over New Year's weekend, and owner Rob Segler describes it as a "judgment-free zone."
"We offer something different for those who wish to improve their fitness," Segler said. "When most people think of a gym, they think of bulky, buff weightlifters; sleek, toned women doing aerobics or spin classes; or those crazy P90X people. That is not what we are about here at Planet Fitness."
It's a place for those who don't fit the stereotypes, which is most people, he said.
"Most people aren't at that level of fitness, and we welcome those who may not have the body types normally associated with it, which is most of the population," Segler said. "The point is to offer a well-equipped, well-staffed place for people to come in and pursue their fitness goals in a comfortable, judgment-free facility."
To emphasize that approach, Planet Fitness offers such unusual features as a free pizza on the first Monday night of each month. On the second Tuesday of each month, early rising exercisers can enjoy bagels and cream cheese in the morning. "It is all about the light, casual, no-pressure envirnoment," Segler said. "We focus on general fitness, and the first step is to get you in the door and get you comfortable with your new regimen." Planet Fitness is equipped for those pursuing their fitness goals, though. It has 20,000 square feet for training and more than 100 pieces of cardio equipment.
"A basic membership is only a dollar," Segler said. "Then, it is $10 a month. The $19.99 a month membership gets you unlimited training, tanning, massage access, as well as access to all Planet Fitness gyms nationwide. You get half-priced cooler drinks and unlimited guest privileges, too."
Planet Fitness is open 24 hours a day and is always staffed.
"We love opening these facilities in smaller towns," Segler said. "The brand tends to be more appreciated there and doesn't have as much competition."
