Student brawls being looked into

Videos show fracas in Hope school office

Several online videos have surfaced of a brawl Tuesday afternoon at Hope High School that show a student fight breaking out in the school office.

Two videos show a group of students entering the office, with the school resource officer attempting to break up fights involving approximately 10 students. It also shows the officer being assaulted by a student during that attempt.

Another video posted to Facebook shows what appears to be a fight in the school cafeteria just prior to the fight in the office.

When asked about the incidents, Hope School District Superintendent Bobby Hart said, "It's an ongoing investigation. I'm sorry. I can't comment on it."

Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton said the district's resource officer asked for backup Tuesday afternoon.

Singleton said one deputy was sent to the high school to help the resource officer. "A deputy responded but didn't have to enter the building. The Hope Police Department is investigating the incident," Singleton said.

Telephone messages were left for Assistant Police Chief Kim Tomlin on Wednesday afternoon but were not immediately returned.
