Six Leg Fun Run slated for Jan. 29 in downtown Texarkana

The second annual Six Leg Fun Run will take place at 2 p.m. Jan. 29 beginning at Front Street in downtown Texarkana.

Participants can pick up packets for the event from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. The fun run/walk will start at 2:30 p.m.

Dogs are welcome but they must be vetted and leashed.

The cost is $20 for walkers and $35 for runners.

Organizers hope to raise $44,000 with this event, which will be used to purchase an adoption trailer for the Texarkana Animal Care and Adoption Center. The trailer will have heat and air, room for 16 animal cages, running water and a price tag of almost $38,000. Money from last year's event and this year's will be combined to purchase the trailer.

The Six Leg Fun Run was started by North Heights seventh grader Shelby Dunphy-Day, who can now add a nonprofit to her list of accomplishments.

"We've really grown," Dunphy-Day said. "I've started a nonprofit called Shelby's P.A.W.S., which stands for Pets Are Worth Saving. It's a nonprofit organization that wants to promote spaying and neutering within the community. We also want to promote youth volunteerism and advocacy. Last year we were under the umbrella of HandsOn Texarkana but this year we wanted to expand and have our own nonprofit."

Dunphy-Day was inspired to become an animal advocate after getting a rescue kitten named Sable.

"She was found in a box on the side of the road. She was the only kitten still alive. Now she's about to turn 5. She's actually one of the reasons I wanted to start the race. Knowing she came from a 2-ounce kitten to a perfectly healthy cat made me want to help all animals get a home like she did," Dunphy-Day said.

Other activities on race day include pet contests, pet photography and a variety of local vendors.

Sponsors for the event and volunteers are still needed.
