Workshop to focus on riparian areas in watershed

The Sulphur River Basin Authority, the Bowie County AgriLife Extension Office and the Texas Water Resources Institute will hold a free Riparian and Streams Ecosystems workshop on the Sulphur River Basin Watershed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 in the Great Room of the Truman Arnold Student Center on the campus of Texarkana College, 2500 N. Robison Road, Texarkana, Texas.

Riparian areas occur along the edge of water bodies and are crucial to a vital ecosystem. Workshop training will focus on the nature and function of stream and riparian zones, plus the benefits and direct effects of healthy riparian zones. The programs will cover watershed processes and an introduction to riparian principles and vegetation, basic hydrology, erosion/deposition principles and potential causes of degradation. The workshop will include indoor classroom presentations and an outdoor stream walk of Cowhorn Creek.

Continuing education units are available, and attendees will receive a certificate of completion. A catered lunch will be provided by SRBA.

Interested parties should RSVP by Jan. 24. Online registration is available at naturalresourcestraining.tamu.edu/schedule. For more information, contact Nikki Dictson at 979-458-5915 or [email protected].
