Oh, sugar! Area Girl Scouts begin cookie sales today

The time of year many look forward to has finally arrived. Girl Scout cookies go on sale today.

All the classic flavors will be available, including Thin Mints, Trefoils, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos, Savannah Smiles and the gluten-free Toffee-tastic. New this year is the much-anticipated Girl Scout S'mores cookie, which is a crunchy graham sandwich cookie with a chocolate and marshmallow filling.

"Everybody seems to be very excited about the new S'mores cookie," said Taylor Fisher, communications specialist for the Girl Scouts-Diamonds of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Cookies are $4 except for the S'mores cookie and Toffee-tastic, and those are $5 a box.

Cookies can be ordered from a Girl Scout directly or a Scout can send people a digital cookie link. People who need help finding a Scout to order from can email [email protected].

The money earned from cookie sales is beneficial to Girl Scouts in a few ways. It helps Scouts earn money for educational activities and community projects, but it also teaches them life skills, including goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics.

"Girls use the money to go to camp, go on trips with their troops, attend STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs, benefit the community, etc. Girls use their cookie funds to benefit their communities in amazing ways," Fisher said.

Cookie delivery will begin at the end of February, and booth sales take place in March.
