Fireworks create lots of complaints but no major issues, police say

Numerous firework complaints poured in to Texarkana police on both sides of the city Tuesday, but no major fires or disturbances occurred.

"There were no major problems. Just a lot of calls. We had extra officers on patrol and they were still swamped," said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for the Texarkana, Texas, Police Department.

Having or shooting off fireworks is illegal within the city limits on both sides of Texarkana.

Texarkana, Ark., police officers kept busy also.

"We did our very best to enforce the ordinance, but it's hard when you have that many calls. You have to prioritize," said Officer Kristi Bennett, spokeswoman for Texarkana, Ark., Police Department.

According to the Bi-State Central Records and Communications daily briefing sheet, Texarkana, Texas and Texarkana, Ark., police received close to 300 firework calls on Monday and Tuesday. Officers issued more than 100 warnings, nine citations and made one arrest.

The fee for a fireworks violation is $195 on the Arkansas-side and $171 on the Texas-side.

Numerous firework reports were also reported Wednesday.
