JP: Miller County's revenues declining

Miller County, Ark., revenues have been declining, and Justice of the Peace John Haltom wanted the Quorum Court to be aware of the trend.
Haltom asked for a report during the meeting Tuesday from Miller County Treasurer Teresa Reed to let the Quorum Court know about the reduction in revenues.
"We're going in the wrong direction and we need to be aware of the trend. The sales tax revenues are off," Haltom said.
"We've had to spend $710,000 out of the county general investment fund, which included $195,000 for the purchase of new election equipment," Reed said.
"We have had to transfer $441,000 from the county general fund to the jail to cover bills. We're going to transfer $60,000 Tuesday to cover more bills," she said.
The number of prisoners in the jail have declined, which reduces the revenue, Reed said.
The Quorum Court approved a resolution allowing Miller County Circuit Clerk Mary Pankey to apply for an automated records system grant of $20,000.
The grant will pay for scanning, book and page indexing of 194 deed books and a software provider.
The Quorum Court also approved a resolution for the Doddridge Development Council to submit an application for a park grant.
The council will apply for $45,000 through the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism to develop a public park in Doddridge.
