De Queen council passes 911 display ordinance

The De Queen, Ark., City Council recently approved an ordinance requiring each house and building to display the numbers assigned by the 911 emergency system.

The De Queen Fire Department will place the numbers on the houses and buildings for free, said De Queen Mayor Billy Ray McKelvey.

"The fire department has agreed to go house to house and place 911 numbers on homes for free.

"We will put a little money in the budget to get more numbers if needed," he said.

"If someone wants to donate, we will take it.We will go as far as we can go with the money," McKelvey said.

The ordinance states numbers should be placed where they can be clearly seen from the street.

The letters should be at least 3 inches in height for residential structures and 6 inches in height for nonresidential structures.

The letters should be placed on the structure on top of the door or on either side of the door, McKelvey said.

"We've had complaints about not being able to see the numbers," he said.

The number will help locate houses or businesses for emergencies and for postal service or delivery services.
