Recent flooding and the resulting devastation have left some Arkansans in need of a helping hand.

Area legislators are asking the citizens of Texarkana and Southwest Arkansas to donate gift cards or cash in any amount to help their struggling neighbors.

"It's the right thing to do," said state Rep. Carol Dalby, R-Texarkana.

Dalby said colleagues who serve the hardest-hit areas have observed flood victims "literally counting pennies while standing in line to buy things."

Dalby said even a $5 gift card could be life-changing for those whose lives are now being lived moment to moment as Northeast Arkansas continues to try to clean up, pick up the pieces and return to normality.

"Those of us in Southwest Arkansas know all too well the long lasting effects of floods. Your area state senators and representatives are joining together by asking everyone in our districts to donate gift cards (or cash for gift cards) from Walmart, Home Depot, Lowe's or prepaid Visa cards," states a press release issued by Dalby, Sens. Jimmy Hickey, Bruce Maloch and Larry Teague, and Reps. David Fielding, Lane Jean, DeAnn Vaught and Danny Watson.

"Though we are separated by distance, we are one, and when one of our fellow Arkansans hurts, we all hurt," the press release states.

Gift cards and checks can be dropped off at Texarkana Chamber of Commerce at 819 State Line Ave. or call the Chamber at 903-792-7191. Contact a local legislator to have a gift card picked up.

The cards will be distributed to the flood victims so that they can purchase fans, home repair items and everyday necessities. The Texarkana Chamber will accept gift cards and checks for the flood relief effort through May 19.
