Beginning today, two animal shelter fees that Texarkana, Texas, charges its residents will increase.

Claiming an animal impounded in the Animal Care and Adoption Center will increase from $90 to $150 plus any additional fees determined by the shelter. Surrendering an animal to the shelter, previously free, will cost $150.

Texas-side residents will continue to pay the fees to the city of Texarkana, Texas, not to the shelter itself.

The change is a result of Texarkana, Ark., which runs the shelter, raising the price it charges other cities to house their stray and surrendered animals.

On April 17, the Arkansas-side Board of Directors voted to add or increase various fire department and animal shelter fees. Holding an animal for another city went up from $90 to $150, with an extended-stay fee of $10 a day beginning the sixth day an animal is held.
