Veterans Day Events

Area schools, churches and communities are hosting several events over the coming days in honor of Veterans Day.

The earliest events begin this week and some will occur after Veterans Day.

Following is a list of the events by day.

Thursday

5:30 p.m. at Westlawn Elementary School, 410 Westlawn Drive, Texarkana, Texas.

Friday

10 a.m. at Little River County Courthouse in Ashdown. A reception will be held in the lobby.

2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Williams Memorial United Methodist Church, 4000 Moores Lane, hosts its Salute to Veterans. Please RSVP 903-794-3311.

Saturday

11 a.m. Texarkana Area Veterans Council will host a Veterans Day Parade in downtown Texarkana. Starts at East Broad and Hazel streets. This year's theme: "Gone, But Not Forgotten." For more information call 870-773-8279 or email [email protected].

Sunday

10 a.m. Fairland Holiness Church, 3819 Miller County 9 near Fouke, Ark., will honor veterans with a program titled "America The Beautiful, God Shed His Grace on Thee." Guest speaker will be Dominic Marano, a Vietnam veteran. Dinner will be served afterward in the fellowship hall.

Monday

Texarkana, Texas, Independent School District will host four programs on Veterans Day. Activities include student performances and veteran appreciation. All veterans and their families are welcome to attend any school event. Those events are:

8 a.m. at Theron Jones Early Literacy Center, 2600 W. 15th St.

8:30 a.m. at Spring Lake Park Elementary School, 4324 Ghio Fish Blvd.

9 a.m. at Highland Park Elementary School, 401 W. 25th St.

9 a.m. at Morriss Elementary School, 4826 University Park.

Texarkana, Ark., School District's North Height's Junior High students will host a breakfast for Texarkana-area veterans at Central Baptist Church, located at 2117 East 35th Street. Breakfast will be served at the church from 8 to 10 a.m. To RSVP or for more information, call 870-773-1091. More TASD events for veterans are planned Tuesday and Thursday.

Atlanta, Texas, Independent School District will host three programs to honor veterans.

9 a.m. at Atlanta Primary School, 505 Rabbit Blvd.

1:30 p.m. at Atlanta Elementary School cafeteria, 902 ABC Lane.

3:30 p.m. at Atlanta Middle School gym, 600 High School Lane.

8 a.m. at New Boston Middle School gym, 1215 Texas Highway 8 North, New Boston, Texas. Program followed by breakfast for veterans and their families afterward.

9 a.m. at Linden-Kildare High School, 205 Kildare Road, Linden, Texas. Refreshments will be provided for the public from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

9 a.m. at Redwater Independent School District, cafetorium, 202 Red River Road North, Redwater, Texas. A reception for veterans will follow the program.

10 a.m. Cornerstone Retirement Community will host a 1940s USO Show with costumes plus other entertainment and guest speakers.

11 a.m. at Cossatot Community College of the University of Arkansas Weyerhauser Room, De Queen campus. The De Queen High School band and show choir will perform.

12:30 p.m. at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia. Memorial service in front of Harton Theatre in the mall at SAU, followed by a reception at SAU Veterans Resource Center at 208 Nelson Hall. In case of rain, the tribute will be held in the Reynolds Center Foundation Hall.

Tuesday

10 a.m. College Hill Elementary School, 200 Artesian St., Texarkana, Ark. Fourth graders will present a program to salute area veterans for their service through poems, songs and dance.

6 p.m. Vietnam Veterans of America Inc. Chapter No 278 will host a 25th anniversary rededication of the Korea/Vietnam Memorial at Seventh Street and State Line Avenue in downtown Texarkana. Program includes reading of names, songs, blessings, a brief history of the memorial and honoring veterans and their families from the 20 area counties and parishes covered. Bring lawn chairs.

Thursday

2 p.m. Kilpatrick Elementary School, 1002 E. 35th St., Texarkana, Ark. Third graders will present programs at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.
