Dine On The Line

There has always been something of a rivalry between the two Texarkanas.

The annual showdown between Arkansas High and Texas High on the gridiron is one of the most public-and for the most part enjoyable-examples of this competition.

But there has been political and economic contest between the two cities for a long time as well. And there have been factions in our community who ruled that rivalry for their own gain.

We think most residents of both sides of the state line prefer to look at Texarkana as one city.

Yes, the fact that we have two state and municipal governments, two police and fire departments and the like makes the Twin Cities somewhat unique. But we think most folks here would like to see the cities cooperate and do what's best for Texarkana as a whole.

That's the reason behind Dine on the Line, coming this Friday in Downtown Texarkana.

Sponsored by Main Street Texarkana, Dine on the Line is a block party designed to bring people from both sides of the state line together to share a meal, drinks, conversation and a good time.

There will be a table set up on the state line between the post office and Broad Street. Naaman's BBQ is providing the food. Festivities start at 5 p.m. and continue until 8 p.m. And at about 6:30 p.m. everyone attending will raise their glasses for a Toast to Texarkana.

Downtown Pecan Point Brewpub will have its special "Ale of Two Cities" available, and there will be music as well, provided by local band Jawbone.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for kids 12 years of age or younger.

You can get them at mainstreettexarkana.org. It pays to order today as prices go up $5 per ticket the day of the event.

Dine on the Line benefits Main Streets efforts to revitalize downtown-something that would be good for both Texarkanas. In our view, anything that unites rather than divides our community is worth supporting. And if you can have a good time along the way, so much the better.
