Two new murals are slated for downtown

New art will adorn downtown in the near future in the form of two murals on the Arkansas side.

"Main Street Texarkana voted to go ahead with the project at our October meeting," said Ina McDowell, Main Street Texarkana executive director. "We are just waiting on the Arkansas Historical Commission to give their go ahead."

One of the murals, depicting locomotive activity, will be on the south side of Union Station downtown.

"That one is part of the beautification of that area," McDowell said. "We want that area to look extra nice for visitors arriving by rail."

The other, only described as a colorful display, will be on the south-facing wall of Zapata's, opposite of Hopkin's Ice House.

According to McDowell, each mural will be done by local artists.

"We are looking at sample pieces and considering which ones to hire," she said.

The project is funded by a combination of grants and money previously raised by Main Street Texarkana.
