Miller County works to restructure personnel policy

A Miller County Quorum Court committee is expected to finish revamping its personnel policy for county employees in a couple of weeks.

"I'm glad we're nearly finished. We've worked for about a year and we will have a good policy for county employees and for the county," Andy LaGrone, chairman of the personnel committee, said after Monday's meeting.

"It was vague and we needed to update it," said LaGrone, District 8 Justice of the Peace.

Prosecuting Attorney Stephanie Potter-Black reviewed the 50-page document to assist the personnel committee.

The prosecutor will write the changes so the proposals can be added to the policy.

The committee discussed policy from designated smoking areas, compensation "comp" time payments and sick leave to firearm possession.

Regarding firearms, county personnel will follow state law for carrying a weapon on county property.

Committee Vice Chairman Carl Standridge summarized the purpose of the personnel policy.

"We want to pay people for working," said Standridge, District 4 Justice of the Peace.

The committee also briefly discussed where an employee would report sexual harassment. Sexual harassment could be reported to the county judge or the supervisor.

The committee also agreed that the request for a drug or alcohol test would be requested by the supervisor or county judge.

The committee includes LaGrone, Standridge, District 2 Justice of the Peace Thornton Mitchell, District 3 JP Charles Nettle and District 11 JP Rodney Watkins.
