The American Cancer Society's "We Can be Heroes" Relay takes place from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Four States Fairgrounds on the midway.

The public is invited to come on out and enjoy the fun. There is no entry fee to get into Relay for Life.

Thirteen teams will participate in the event, and most teams do some type of fundraiser during Relay for Life, whether it's setting up games for kids to play or preparing food.

"There will be a car show, a chili cook-off at 5 p.m. and a mascot race at 7 p.m. There will be good food for sale, from brisket burgers to walking tacos, along with games for the kiddos and face painting. And the best part is all the money raised at this event goes to the American Cancer Society," said Katie Stone, team leader.

People will also have the opportunity to honor or remember those who've battled cancer.

"My favorite part of the event is around 9 p.m. when we turn off all the lights and turn on our luminaria bags. Each bag represents someone who had battled cancer. This part of the ceremony gets me every time. It makes all the hard work worth it," Stone said.

ACS provides a variety of services locally, including low-cost hotel stays for cancer patients who come to this area for treatment and volunteers who drive cancer patients to doctor appointments or for treatment. They're also working to establish the Look Good, Feel Better program.

"Cancer patients often lose their hair when receiving treatments, or their skin isn't they same. They may have no eyebrows or eyelashes. All those things can affect them. ACS started this campaign because they wanted everyone to look good, but feel better. So we get volunteers to come, makeup artists, cosmetologists, whoever can volunteer to assist with these cancer patients and helping them look good and feel better," Stone said.
