A driver in a drag race that resulted in the death of a Texarkana woman has been arrested.
The Texarkana, Texas, Police Department has arrested Kalob Doyle, 25, of Texarkana on a charge of racing on roadway causing serious bodily injury or death, said Shawn Vaughn, spokesman for TTPD.
Doyle was identified as a driver of a drag racing vehicle that struck LaQuania Hopkins' vehicle on March 20. Hopkins died at the scene of the accident.
Investigators determined that Doyle and Gilbert Burton, 52, of Texarkana, Texas, were racing their vehicles southbound on Richmond Road at a very high rate of speed at 5:27 that Tuesday afternoon. As Hopkins attempted to drive her 2003 Toyota Avalon across Richmond Road at Wheeler Street, Doyle's 2000 Ford Mustang struck her in the driver's side door. Burton's 2007 Dodge Charger did not contact Hopkins' vehicle, and he immediately fled the scene without stopping.
Burton turned himself on March 25 after being notified of a warrant for his arrest for racing on roadway causing serious bodily injury or death. He was booked into the Bi-State jail and released a short time later after posting a $100,000 bond.
The arrest warrant for Doyle was also issued in March, but officers were forced to delay serving it while Doyle received treatment for injuries suffered in the crash. He remains in custody in the Bi-State jail, where a judge set his bond at $50,000.
Racing on roadway causing serious bodily injury or death is a second-degree felony, punishable by not less than two years and not more than 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
