Texarkana College is getting $100,000 in grant money for its safety training program, which offers workplace safety courses for community employers, workers and the public, according to college officials.

"The support we receive from Texas Mutual (Insurance Co.) allows us to provide much-needed safety training to our local employers and employees," Brandon Washington, dean of workforce and community & business education at Texarkana College, said in a press release. "Safety education is an important part of workplace training, and we're proud to be a part of the solution in addressing workplace hazards as we all work toward creating safer workplaces."

TC is one of 10 colleges in Texas that provide safety classes via funding from Texas Mutual, which provides workers' compensation insurance. The company has awarded $6.6 million in safety education grants since 1999.

This is the second year TC has received the grant. Last year, the college launched a training program to increase safety awareness and reduce work-related accidents and injuries. The program aims to offer a wide range of courses related to the Texarkana-area workforce.

"Workplace safety education has always been and will continue to be a sound investment," Eric Bourquin, vice president of safety services at Texas Mutual, said in the press release. "We are happy to partner with Texas community colleges to make safety programs available to their communities and available to employees across Texas."
