Trio charged in fatal drive-by that claimed 19-year-old man

Trial dates have been set for three adult suspects accused in a fatal drive-by shooting last year in Ashdown, Ark.

Wimbledon’s men’s semifinals had a major feel to them Friday with Jack Nicklaus (left) and Rod Laver (right) watching from the stands. Nicklaus won 18 majors during his golf career, and Laver won 11 majors during his tennis career.

Sevier County residents Joshua King, 20, and Brady Winship, 19, are scheduled for a pretrial hearing Aug. 7 in Little River County. Their combined trial will be Aug. 14-16.

Co-defendant Tenescha Wilkerson, 18, also of Sevier County, is scheduled for a pretrial hearing Sept. 4 in Little River County, with a trial date of Sept. 24.

The trio are charged in the July 16, 2017, death of Desmond Smith, 19, who died of a gunshot to the chest. Samari Covington, 19, was wounded in the arm but has recovered.

King is charged with second-degree murder, first-degree battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

Winship and Wilkerson each are charged with second-degree accomplice to murder, first-degree battery and unlawful discharge of a firearm from a vehicle.

A juvenile was also charged as an accomplice. Further information was unavailable.

Ashdown police were dispatched to a home at 195 Washington St. about 1 a.m. July 16 regarding a shooting.

According to the arrest affidavit, all four suspects told officers they drove to the house so that King could fight. Winship reportedly was the driver.

At least two suspects reportedly said that King fired a weapon at the group from the vehicle as Winship drove away.
