U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., has been on a campaign tour in Arkansas, including a Tuesday visit at the Texarkana Gazette. He said the No. 1 recent accomplishment of Congress has been adding jobs.

U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., said the federal government's main recent accomplishment is the improvement of the national economy.

"The number 1 thing we've accomplished is adding 3.5 million new jobs. The economy is better and wages are up," he said.

Cotton cited a tax-cut bill putting $1,200 in the taxpayer's pockets.

"We're keeping the economy running and more money in the back pockets," Cotton said during an editorial board meeting Tuesday at the Texarkana Gazette.

Cotton also said efforts continue to stop the layoffs at the Red River Army Depot. Earlier this year 600 layoffs were announced and recently 300 additional layoffs were announced.

A previous Texarkana Gazette news story said Red River Army Depot intends to work with the National Guard, Marine Corp, and Border Patrol.

The Armored Multi-Purpose Vehicle could provide a source of jobs if contracts were awarded.

Cotton said the local assignment of AMPV repairs could be critical to bringing jobs back to the depot.

Cotton also discussed his meeting with Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and said he has issued a news release about the meeting.

"I had an excellent meeting with Judge Kavanaugh. We spoke at length about his jurisprudence, which I've reviewed over the last month, and how he sees the Supreme Court's role in our constitutional democracy," Cotton said.

"He stressed judges should not impose their personal views on the public but instead apply the law as written. He has a long and impressive record of public service from his time on the D.C. Circuit, and it's clear he has the character and judgment to serve in this very important post. I look forward to supporting his nomination."
