Dental assistant course starts Sept. 8

Texarkana School of Dental Assisting is set to start its first 10-week course Sept. 8.

Participants who complete the course will be licensed as registered dental assistants in Arkansas and Texas.

"They will be certified in nitrous oxide administration, CPR, coronal polishing and radiography," said Rachael Linebarier, the school's director.

The course will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays at Dr. Neil Carmony's office, 4115 Jefferson Ave., Texarkana, Ark. Students will be required to obtain 20 hours of experience outside of class over the duration of the course.

The cost is $3,750 and covers books, lab materials and all licensing fees. Payment options are available. Class size is limited to 20 people.

"It's a good opportunity for the amount of time it takes," Linebarier said.

People with good social skills can make great dental assistants.

"They need really good people skills. They spend a ton of time with patients," Linebarier said.

Dental assistants can earn $13 to $18 an hour or more with additional certifications.
