A joint appearance by the governors of Arkansas and Texas will cause road closures Monday and Tuesday downtown, police are warning.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott will speak at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the downtown courthouse and post office, as part of a launch event for AR-TX REDI, a new regional economic development organization.

A large crowd is expected.

For security, various streets around the building will be barricaded from 8 p.m. Monday through the end of the event, around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Texarkana, Ark., Police Department said in a news release.

North State Line Avenue will be shut down from Seventh Street to Fourth Street. All streets within a block east and west will be barricaded, and no vehicle traffic will be allowed inside the area.

At noon Tuesday, East Fifth Street from Beech Street to North State Line will be shut down, as well, to accommodate the local high school bands participating. The closure of East Fifth will cause some detours.

Citizens who need access to the courthouse or post office will still be able to access the building but will be required to park and walk about a block. They are encouraged to use the parking lot next to the old St. Michael's Hospital building for access to the building by foot.

Those who attend the event Tuesday are encouraged to use larger parking lots nearby, which may require a short walk. TAPD asks people to avoid parking vehicles where they block streets or in areas not designed for parking.

Hot temperatures and a chance of rain are forecast for Tuesday. Hydration stations will be in two spots, at Fifth and Olive streets and near the entrance to the Arrow Bar at East Fifth and Wood streets. In the event of rain, the event will be moved to the first-floor lobby of the Bi-State Justice Building.
