Courses aim to meet demand of trucking industry

The U.S. trucking industry needs nearly 300,000 new technicians over the next 10 years to meet demand, according to a recent assessment by the TechForce Foundation.

The University of Arkansas Cossatot will offer diesel technology courses starting January to address this need.

"It is important that parents and educators are informed about the great careers available in transportation, since they often influence the post-secondary choices of young people," Jennifer Maher, executive director at the TechForce Foundation, said in a recent release.

Diesel technology has always been a component of UA Cossatot's Automotive Repair Technology program. Long-time UA Cossatot Automotive Technology instructor Mark Kutak will provide instruction for the program.

UA Cossatot's Diesel Technology program prepares students for entry-level positions in the diesel technician trade in light, medium, and heavy-duty applications. Students learn to work on brake systems, drive trains, electric and electronic circuits, hydraulic systems and diesel engines.

Graduates from these programs will be trained to serve multiple workforce needs spanning from automotive to farm equipment to heavy truck. Wages can range from $18-$35 per hour based on skill level and experience.

"It's a high-skill, high wage-career and diesel techs are needed right here at home," said University of Arkansas Cossatot Chancellor Steve Cole.

UA Cossatot diesel technology courses are from 3 p.m to 8:50 p.m. on Monday -Thursday on the De Queen campus. The first day of class is January 14.

Financial aid and scholarships are available to qualifying students.
