Man, 61, arrested in Hempstead County shooting

A man accused of shooting a Mineral Springs, Ark., man was arrested about 9 a.m. Tuesday.

James Stuart, 61, turned himself in to deputies at the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department in Hope, Ark.

He is awaiting a first court appearance, Sheriff James A. Singleton said.

An attempted-first-degree-murder warrant for Stuart was been issued, and he is also expected to face first-degree battery and terroristic act charges, according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

The reported gunshot victim is Larry Works, 58, of Mineral Springs.

Works said he and a few people were at a house on Clay Hill having a conversation with James Stuart about horses when Stuart got mad and pushed Works' nose with his finger, according to the press release.

Works said a physical altercation between Stuart and himself occurred.

According to Works, Stuart stated, "I got you. I'll be back."

Stuart left, but Works stated he stayed and was talking with others.

Works told investigators that as he was leaving, Stuart pulled up and blocked his white 2006 Ford Expedition, according to the press release.

A witness stated that Stuart was standing about five feet from a tree and had a rifle in his hands, allegedly aiming it at Works, the press release shows.

The witness heard several shots and ran back in the house.

When coming back out of the house, the witness said Works was bleeding and the witness drove the victim to Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana.

Wadley officials contacted the Hempstead County Sheriff's Department about a victim of a gunshot wound that occurred on Hempstead County Road 14.
