Man charged after marijuana seizure

Police say more than $30,000 in cash also found in his vehicle

A Texarkana, Ark., man was arrested when police reportedly found marijuana and more than $30,000 cash in his possession.

Hempstead County, Ark., Deputy Reyn Brown was working "criminal interdiction" on Interstate 30 Sunday morning and stopped a vehicle containing $30,901 cash and marijuana.

Brown stopped a Mercury Regency traveling eastbound at the 23 mile marker on I-30 about 11:47 a.m. Sunday in Hempstead County, Ark.. Brown observed the vehicle going at a lower speed on the interstate with "very dark tinted windows," according to the police report.

Brown questioned the female driver and passenger Quintrill Riley, 27, of Texarkana, Ark.

The driver's name was not released.

While speaking with Quintrill, the deputy smelled marijuana inside the vehicle. Brown said Quintrill appeared nervous and his hands were shaking.

When Quintrill opened the passenger's door of the vehicle to step out, Brown noticed a large amount of U.S. currency in the door panel.

Brown asked Quintrill if he had anything illegal; he stated, "a little weed."

He searched Quintrill and found another large amount of currency in his right pants pocket.

Then, investigator Jeremy McBride arrived and helped search the vehicle. He found a black plastic sack sitting on top of a large speaker box on the left side of the trunk. The sack contained $20,825, mostly banded in stacks of $1,000.

McBride continued searching and found a gray plastic bag inside a brown Gucci bag containing another $8,001 bundled together with rubber bands.

"When McBride located the U.S. currency in the trunk, Quintrill held his arms out and stated 'I knew I was going to jail for this.' The U.S. currency in the door panel was $1,220. Quintrill had $855 in U.S. currency in his right pants pocket," said Hempstead County Sheriff James Singleton.

Quintrill was arrested and $30,901 was packaged and taken as evidence. The vehicle was impounded by Reese Wrecker Service.

Quintrill was taken to the Hempstead County Detention Facility. On the way, he said he had some marijuana in his pants.

"Quintrill told Deputy Brown when he got behind them he got scared and put some marijuana in his pants, but the bag came open and it was loose in his pants. Upon arrival at the HCDF, Quintrill was searched and located some more marijuana that fell out of his pants," Singleton said.

Quintrill was charged with possession of a controlled substance and given a court date of April 2. The female driver was issued a warning and released.
