Investigation into fatal collision on U.S. Highway 71 is ongoing

A fatal vehicle accident that happened Friday night on U.S. Highway 71 near Wilton, Ark., remains under investigation by the Arkansas State Police.

According to a state police fatal crash summary, a 1998 GMC truck, driven by Samuel Maroon, 52, of Ashdown, Ark., was traveling southbound on U.S. 71 when it crossed the center line and collided with the northbound 2011 Ford Focus driven by Jesus Fraier, 34, of De Queen, Ark.

The Gazette first reported that Fraier was driving the GMC truck but according to the ASP report, he was driving the Ford Focus.

Fraier was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident by Little River County Coroner Roddy Smith.

The accident happened at 10:09 p.m. on Friday.

Seven other people in Fraier's vehicle were taken to area hospitals. One of the victims, a child, died from his injuries.

The other victims are expected to recover.

State Police Troop G Capt. Brady Gore said the investigation is still ongoing. Investigators will turn their information over to the prosecutors office to determine if charges will be filed. Gore also said a crash reconstruction team will be investigating the accident.
