Two people have been arrested in Bowie County for allegedly trafficking substantial amounts of marijuana in Texarkana.

Matthew Tyler Smith, 25, and Cassie Rena Scott, 25, were arrested on charges of possession of marijuana over 4 ounces and under 5 pounds, according to Bowie County Sheriff's Office.

Both were booked into the Bi-State Justice Building jail, and bail was set at $30,000. Smith was out on bail and Scott remained in custody Tuesday, Chief Deputy Jeff Neal said.

Members of the sheriff's office have been investigating Smith for allegedly trafficking substantial quantities of marijuana to the Texarkana area. On Monday, information was obtained that Smith would deliver marijuana to Walmart at 4000 New Boston Road.

Smith was supposed to deliver the marijuana in Scott's white, two-door Nissan Altima.

Deputy Westin Fannin watched Interstate 30 westbound at Richmond Road waiting for the Altima. At 12:09 p.m., the vehicle passed by on its way to Walmart. Authorities stopped the vehicle, and Fannin tried to speak with Smith and Scott.

"Fannin said that Smith was looking around and appeared to be searching for an escape route before he was boxed in by Sgt. Rob Hadaway," Neal said.

The suspects were removed from the vehicle, and a blue duffle bag containing four vacuum-sealed bundles of a "green, leafy substance" was taken from the backseat, Neal said. The substance was believed to be marijuana.

"The total weight of these bundles was about 4.5 pounds. Smith also had $2,361 in his possession," Neal said.
