Center: Blood supply critically low

LifeShare asking for community to donate

LifeShare Blood Center has declared a critically low blood supply. Center officials are asking people to donate blood to make sure blood is available on hospital shelves when it's needed.

LifeShare in Texarkana was closed on Tuesday because of inclement weather and other locations throughout the company were also closed.

"All of the schools we were going to that day were closed and it was the same for several of the other centers. Nobody was drawing blood but it was still being used," said Theresa Westbrook, center director. "It's a critical need because we had so many centers down and no mobile (units) out so we have less than a two-day blood supply."

LifeShare will have extended hours this weekend. It will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at 1321 College Drive, Texarkana, Texas.

"We need donors. Across the board, every blood type is low," Westbrook said. "Anybody who is able to donate who is in good health, come out and support your community and insure blood is available for your hospital."

Walk-ins are welcome but appointments can be made at Lifeshare.org to donate at the center or at one of the mobile units which visit towns around the area.

"Donating at the mobile centers works good for people who live out in Magnolia or Atlanta for instance," Westbrook said.
