Hooks lands $628K for after-school programs

Hooks Independent School District was recently awarded a 21st Century Community Learning Centers Grant from the Texas Education Agency.

The $628,616 grant will provide free after-school programs for economically disadvantaged and at-risk students in the district.

The four components included in the program are academic support, enrichment opportunities, family engagement and education, along with college and career preparation.

The Afterschool Centers on Education Program will provide opportunities for students to enhance their success through homework support, tutoring, cooking, sewing, welding, art and other activities.

Parents will also have opportunities to improve their skills with career-based courses including diesel mechanics and welding. Monthly events will also be held for parents.

The Hooks ACE program will be held before and after school on Monday through Friday.

Students will be provided a meal or snack and transportation home from the program will be provided.

Enrollment for the program begins in August and the first day will be Aug. 27.
